Testosterone and Bodybuilding
What is Testosterone?

"Testosterone" is the most important of the male sex hormones collectively called androgens. It plays an important role in both mens and womens bodies, and natural production slows down around the age of 23. Recent scientific research suggests that testosterone plays a much larger role in various functions of the body's overall health than was previously thought. Testosterone therapy and testosterone-increasing supplements are relatively new ways of dealing with decreasing testosterone levels in the body.

Many adult males are affected in numerous ways by low testosterone levels. Symptoms include low energy levels, depression, loss of strength, low sex drive, impotence, obesity, and brittle bones. Currently many doctors will prescribe expensive testosterone therapy to affected men. Recently, over-the-counter products have been hitting the shelves that claim to raise testosterone production. Testosterone-increasing products are also heavily used by athletes - especially bodybuilders to help them build muscle and increase strength.

Until recently, bodybuilders only had one sure way to significantly raise testosterone levels: anabolic steroids. They flood your bloodstream with hormones or other similar compounds that dramatically raise testosterone levels, allowing the body to put on much more lean muscle mass. Fortunately for the law-abiding and health-conscious bodybuilder, supplements and hormone replacement therapy have gained incredible popularity in the past few years and are a legal, safe way to gain muscle. Some supplements may be similar to anabolic steroids in that they raise testosterone levels, but for a number of reasons are safer, cheaper, and may be just about as effective.
